Jennifer Lopez Slammed With $150,000 Lawsuit Over Unauthorized Use Of Photograph

According to a report from Page Six, pop sensation and entertainment icon, Jennifer Lopez, was recently slapped with a $150,000 lawsuit by the organization, Splash News and Picture Agency, for supposed copyright infringement regarding a photo of herself and Alex Rodriguez which she posted on her IG account around two years ago.

The lawsuit, filed in Central District Of California’s US District Court, this past Saturday, charged Jennifer with misusing a photograph without the organization’s permission. The image reportedly showed her holding hands with her fiance while they were having breakfast in the Big Apple in 2017.

The lawsuit stated that Splash “never licensed” the image to the singer, and she went on to use it anyway without their expressed permission. The suit claims someone on her team, or someone acting on her behalf, copied the image and distributed it on her IG in a story on the 7th of November, 2017.

Jennifer Lopez has one of the largest IG followings in the world, accruing a huge number of fans online, around 102 million. The lawsuit claims that on account of the fact the photograph is high-quality and “creative,” the photographer stands to make money from it through proper licensing.

Moreover, the suit claims Lopez has misused the photograph and because of that, the photograph’s potential revenue has been diminished for the aforementioned business and the photographer who took the picture.

Splash first informed Jennifer of the infringement through her representatives on the 12th of December, 2017. This wouldn’t be the first time a celebrity has been charged with misusing a photograph without the company’s permission.

Earlier this year, both Gigi Hadid, as well as Ariana Grande, were taken to court due to posting images of themselves on IG, however, they didn’t own the rights to them nor have the right to upload them on social media before their millions of followers.

This type of lawsuit is commonplace in the world of fashion, celebrity culture, and photography. Despite the fact a photograph might show an image of a person, the person doesn’t own the rights to it, even though the picture is of them. The photographer or the company that employed them owns the copyright.
